ISTE Standard 1a

Tactile Schedule

In the Summer of 2015, I took Assistive Technology (EDTS 660). One of our assignments was to create a piece of assistive technology to meet a fictitious student’s needs. The student I was assigned struggled with daily routine and was a tactile learner. Using this information I was able to create a tactile schedule for the student while spending under ten dollars. This project met ISTE Standard 1a (Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity) which states; "teachers will promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness." As a teacher, I understand that not all students learn in the same way. Students are first and foremost children, they are still developing a sense of self and their abilities to self regulate. I understand this and attempted to build ways for personal self-reflection and flexibility into my classroom structure. I was able to meet this ISTE Standard because through the creation of this assistive technology I was able to model innovative thinking to meet student needs, and the more a teacher demonstrates or practices what he or she preaches, the more students are able to internalize those ideals and put them into practice in their own lives.
